SERMON BY ELDER EMMANUEL NYARKO

MAIN TEXT: EPHESIANS 5:8-14
"For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.
But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.
Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light."

The Ephesian church was one of the churches that seven  letters (recorded in Revelations) was addressed to. The city of Ephesus was a port-city with a very good economy - they were in control of other territories. Because of their good economy, they lived as they liked and had a god of fertility who helped them in issues of child bearing. This is the kind of people that Paul was addressing. One can tell the challenges that confronted the people who had come to Christ in those days. Apostle Paul therefore began this chapter by admonishing them to be followers of God (Ephesians 5:1).

Today, this message is being addresses to us, not the Ephesus church. We are being called to be light to the world. The world. The world which is full of darkness must be lit by us.
Forms of darkness include:

  1. Physical Darkness:- Visible to all
  2. Judicial Darkness:- Lack of knowledge/law/principle (1 Thessalonians 5:1-5)
The knowledge which others lack is one that we possess. Christ is coming again not as a saviour of the world but rather as a Judge.
  3. Spiritual Darkness:- Demonic or enmity with God. We who once were darkness have been turned onto light.
"BE" has a price and responsibility. We must therefore avail ourselves to be light.

How can I be the Light that Dispels Darkness?
  1. Desire to work for God and His people. Nehemiah stood up to build the walls of Jerusalem
  2. Be jealous for God: - David appeared before Goliath. Darkness had covered the people of Israel because they feared Goliath. David became jealous for god by going to the war front. He then helped to restore light to Israel. Beloved, be jealous for God!
  3. Hate the tings of darkness
  4. Be willing to be singled out: - The contemporary youth wants to be identified with the majority even in acts of wickedness/darkness.
The Lord wants you to stand and cause your light to shine upon darkness wherever you are.
