DO IT WELL!

From the beginning of the year we have come to an agreement that true worship is through Christ and all the rest is false worship. Today, we turn our attention to attitude in worship, which is required for results.

Main Readings: Genesis 4:1-9; 1Cor. 11:27-29; Rev 3:15,16 Eccl. 9:10

IN BRIEF
Everybody relates to God, but what makes the difference is how. Some relate to Him with reverence (Abel), some with apathy (Cain I, v3), and some with contempt (Cain II, v9) The normal axiom has been that our sin separates us from God (Isaiah 59: 1,2) but who can make that assertion, now that Jesus, the sacrificial lamb of God, has paid for all our sin. In Isaiah 58 as in 1 Corinthians 11, the people observed the sacrifice ordinances of burnt offerings, fasting and appearing before the lord, but their attitude was selfish. What can separate us from God now is our attitude.

SACRIFICE WITH ATTITUDE
After man’s fall, the children of Adam and Eve probably learnt quickly that to draw near God now and again they needed to bring Him an offering, but it seems only Abel learnt that it was not just the sacrifice that mattered, but how that sacrifice was given. Therefore, as Cain was bringing an nondescript “fruit of the ground”, Abel brought “of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof”. The Lord quickly drove home the lesson for them, by accepting Abel and his sacrifice, because he did it well, and disregarding Cain and his sacrifice, because did it not well. Of course, Abel’s sacrifice could not be said to be perfect (the only perfect sacrifice to God is Christ), but clearly He did his best under the circumstances. His heart was right!

JESUS IS SACRIFICE, ATTITUDE IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY
Sacrifice and Doing Well as principles of drawing near to the Holy and Almighty God have been the theme of the Scriptures. Sacrifice was necessary to atone for sin, and doing well is necessary for relating to God. Jesus has offered the perfect sacrifice on our behalf, so what now remains is our Doing Well.

FAITH IS RIGHT EXPRESSION OF OUR ATTITUDE
Consider that He is God to whom you have come. Because He is infinite in power and resources, there should be no limit to what you are willing to offer Him in service. Consider whatever He asks you to do in the light of Who He is, and not in the light of the circumstances alone, or what everyone else is doing:
1. Do not just pray; pray reverently, thoughtfully, believing and trusting
2. Do not just sing, sing sweetly, sing adoring Him, sing reaching out to the lost
3. Do not just talk; speak with salt, truthfully, encouragingly, and considerately
4. Do not just give, give as to meet a need, and generously
5. Do not just find a wife, a job, children, friends, etc., but find a wife, a job, children and friends that will make your friendship with God stronger, not weaker
6. Do not just come to the Lord’s table, come as having examined yourself and discerned the body

REWARDS OF NOT BEING JUST A WORSHIPPER, BUT WORSHIPPING WELL
From Abel (Discerning Worshipper), Enoch (Holy Worshipper), Abraham (Obedient Worshipper) Caleb (Excellent Worshipper), David (Creative Worshipper), we can learn a lot about the HOW God wants, and begin to enjoy the benefits of true worship:
1. Lifted Countenance
2. Exceptional Grace
3. Fruitfulness
4. Good Testimony
5. Leadership in the house of God
