WAITING UPON THE LORD
Main Text: Daniel 1:1-21; Acts 1: 4
Other references: Joel 2:28
Memory Verse
Isaiah 40:31 –
‘But
they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up
with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk,
and not faint.’-KJV
It is usually difficult for us to
wait but as the popular saying goes ‘It
pays to wait’
As Christians, it is very rewarding
to wait on the Lord in pursuit of all our lives endeavours.
Some Biblical examples
Ø Abraham & Sarah – to
begot Isaac – Abraham’s part was just to obey God. Gen 12:1-3
a. Abraham was 25years old
when he was called set out from his people
b. When Abram got to Canaan,
there were people living there but God said “to your offspring will I give this
land”
c. Abraham was 100 years when
he begot Isaac.
Ø Noah – the flood and
subsiding waters
Waited for the flood to subside for 150 days
Ø Joseph – for his ‘time’ in
power
Through Joseph we learn how suffering, no matter how unfair, develops
strong character and deep wisdom.
Ø Jesus – for the time to be
fulfilled
Ø Mary & Martha – for
Jesus to arrive when Lazarus died
Jesus waited for 4 days after the death of Lazarus before He went there
Ø The Disciples – for the promised Holy Spirit – Acts
2
Ø All believers – awaiting
Jesus return
In each case they
·
Knew God’s promises
·
Rested in God’s Power
·
Relied upon His love
As Christians, God wants us to rely
on Him in whatever we are doing.
When we wait on the Lord, we will
have inner strength.
From the main text, Daniel had that
inner strength to say no to sin.
Requirements of waiting upon the Lord
a. Waiting on the Lord
requires patient trust – giving God the benefit of the doubt that God knows
what He is doing.
b. Waiting on the Lord
reminds us that God is in control – that fact remains that we are not in charge
but God is in charge.
c. Waiting on the Lord allows
God to do His work – God’s timing is the best
d. Waiting on the Lord
increases our strength
According to Acts 1, the disciples
were asked to wait in Jerusalem until the Holy Spirit came on them.
The disciples in patient and fervent
prayers waiting for the promised Holy Spirit got the full strength of the Holy
Spirit when it finally descended on them
Again, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and
Azariah came out ten times better than all the magicians and the enchanters in
the household of King Nebuchadnezzar after they earnestly waited upon the Lord.
Daniel was put into the lion’s den
but the lions could not do him anything
Shadrack, Meshach and Abednego were
thrown into the fiery of furnace but were not burnt.
Let us learn to wait on the Lord and
hope to renew our strength for greater works.
