MARKS OF A DISCIPLE: LOVING ONE ANOTHER

"Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away."

Jesus intimate that what will mark out of His Disciples for the world to know is LOVE. What will distinguish disciples from non-disciples is the mark of love. The implication is that for the world to know us as disciples, they must first see us exhibiting love to one another and to the world.

From the main text, it is observed that love is placed higher than gifts. Without love the operations of spiritual gifts, though good, is fruitless. Love commits a disciple to do the Master's will and live the Master's life. The marks of love are;

  1.  Love overcomes evil with good. Love covers multitudes of sins. Love forgives.
  2. Love yields and shows mercy instead of judgement. Love works no ill will toward any.
  3. Love edifies. Love destroys oppression.
  4. Love breeds peace. Where love prevails strife dies. Love leads us into repentance and change.

 Points of Discussion

  1. What are some of the characteristics of Love?
  2. How can you demonstrate love to your fellow Christian?
  3. How would you show love to people of other religious groups?
  4. How would you demonstrate love to your Enemies?

Memory Verse: John 13:34
"A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another."
